Dexter

tabula rasa  said about 7 years ago  or at  5:01PM on Saturday, December 30 2006 in television

Are any of you guys watching Dexter? It's quite entertaining, in a strange sort of way.

Dexter Morgan

Quick summary: based on the book Darkly Dreaming Dexter it stars Michael C. Hall (Six Feet Under) as a forensic pathologist working for the police and specialising in blood. Dexter, appearing normal to everyone else, is actually a sociopath who deals with those who've escaped justice in his own special way.

The first episode starts off ok, but the series just gets better from there. Heaps of black humour and wry commentary. It's a good psychological drama with a major story arc running through it.

From Episode 2 they use a great title sequence that shows Dexter making breakfast & getting ready in the morning. For something with no actual violence, it has some of the most violent imagery I've seen. Suits the show perfectly. Youtube video here (but it loses something at the normal youtube screen size).

what is "black humour" exactly?

tabula rasa  said about 7 years ago:

& here's the picture missing from above:

tabula rasa  said about 7 years ago:

I'd say it's humour that makes light of death and other serious matters, with the humour made by the person affected. It's a dry, dark humour.

ah, I thought this was about this guy

or this guy

tabula rasa  said about 7 years ago:

lol !

It could've been Dexter (ex) from The Avalanches.

Dexter the robot as a serial killer. Now I'd watch that show!

Yeah, watched the whole series, and thought it was brilliant...good to see a few regulars from Oz in it too. They're going to shoot another series based on the second book too, and I think that a third book is scheduled for release next year.

tabula rasa  said about 7 years ago:

Good to hear re second series. I think I might pick up the books as I did enjoy the first series.

Lane  said about 7 years ago:

this is really, really good.

bees're bees  said about 7 years ago:

So..... how do you watch it?

Lane  said about 7 years ago:

your friend you dated briefly in high school tracks you down on the internet after ten years of not seeing you, then they download it off the internet and burn it to a cd and post it to you just for the hell of it, because they are nice

bees're bees  said about 7 years ago:

Cuuuuute!!!

Lane  said about 7 years ago:

the sound design in dexter is great. most of the normal every day sound effects (voices excluded) are unusually low in volume. just background texture. enhances his distance from the every day world. but in the memories and the killing; the things which shape his life, things are nice and defined, sharp, crystal clear, heightened in the way the moments in our life that shape us linger.

Bumping this thread for people who need some good winter torrents to warm their hearts. Dexter is brilliant.

ProDelgado  said about 7 years ago:

Read both books, and I think that the third one is actually out now, or due out now...fuck Harry Potter...

tabula rasa  said about 7 years ago:

The first book is floating around at Borders & the like as a $10 promotional edition to get people into the series (or it was 2 months ago).

ProDelgado  said about 7 years ago:

Yup, they did something similar here in the UK, think it was £3.99 and had a sticker that said you could return it and get your money back if you didn't enjoy it...

tabula rasa  said about 7 years ago:

Episodes 1 & 2 of Dexter Season 2 are available for torrenting over on eztvefnet.org.

zadie  said about 7 years ago:

ORSUM

I'm surprised how few people are hearting dexter the crushable murderer.

This article confirms what we've been thinking all along; that Dexter has turned into a big ol' stinkpile.

Two eps to go and still new characters, I'm just watching for the sake of finishing at this point. Anyone else care at all about Vogel and her long lost kid?

whatwhat  said about 1 year ago:

i gave up watching about three eps into this series. last season i think i made it thru til they killed off the dude from rome.

they've really given it an inglorious death.

Shithouse.

sting-bono  said about 1 year ago:

This show had definitely lost it over the years but that was a decent series finale, if not a bit disappointing that it substituted a real storm for the proverbial shit storm. But pretty well done. Could've stopped watching after the John Lithgow season and it would've been a pretty great show.

Food  said about 1 year ago:

I thought the ending was horrible and predictable...and annoying.

blake3030  said about 1 year ago:

Fuck that was bad.

whatwhat  said about 1 year ago:

Reviews have eviscerated it.

Kinda tempted to watch just to see how shithouse it was.

moke  said about 1 year ago:

What Sting said. That John Lithgoe season was the last good one. Since then, it has mostly been awful, apart from the occasional cliffhanger.

I wondered about Masuka's daughter too.
Did they intend for her to be a significant character and change their mind, or did they just need some new nice tits to show for no particular reason?

Ghostface  said about 1 year ago:

at least we saw her boobies. and they were nice

moribunderast  said about 1 year ago:

I just watched this finale. Have to give them credit, for a season of television that's the worst I've ever watched all the way through, they ended it on fittingly spectacular note of shit. None of that made any sense. ''How did you find me?'' says Hannah, after walking around airports and bus stations with no manner of disguise on.

As for poor Dora Madison Burge (Masuka's daughter) she was great on Friday night lights and I actually felt a bit ill when she nuded up for this show. Fucken gratuitous garbage. Her character served literally no function. The most pointless storyline in television history.

Holy crap, what a crappy candle.

sting-bono  said about 1 year ago:

I'll be honest, when the last episode finished I'd assumed it was only the second last because I was thinking it was on the same timeframe as Breaking Bad. Then the Foxtel voiceover man said, ''that was the series finale of Dexter, stay tuned next week for new episodes of Eastbound and Down''. And maybe I was a bit, 'oh thats the end... really?!' with a mixture of 'new eastbound and down, fuck yes!'. That AV article is pretty funny and spot on. I think maybe the show's budget was spent on the storm special fx and not on the writing, also I'd often thought how awkward the Dexter and Deb freshly divorced in real life but so chummy on the show situation was.

So, he's a lumberjack?

Terrible ending. I wasn't expecting much but still disappointed.

TagoMago  said about 10 months ago:

okay so i just finished watching season 7, which, surprisingly, was pretty good. probably the best effort since season 4. should i even attempt the last season or just leave it at that?

TagoMago  said about 10 months ago:

thanks cunts.

klaximopark  said about 10 months ago:

Leave it. The final season was PAINFUL.

TagoMago  said about 10 months ago:

oh god that was awful. that last episode just made me depressed.
