Controversy! How We Purple Rained On Prince’s After-Show Parade
News posted Tuesday, May 15 2012 at 03:00 PM.
Related: The Empress, Prince.

The Empress – a 220-capacity institution in Fitzroy North – fielded some strange phone calls from eager Prince fans last night. Rumours of an after-show jam following last night’s gig at Rod Laver were fuelled by Herald Sun reporter Nui Te Koha who tweeted it’d be taking place at Club 23 at Crown Casino at 1am, only to retract the claim an hour later.

We decided to get in on the action, sending rabid Prince fans on a wild goose chase that started at Fitzroy North institution The Empress, continued on to Collingwood’s The Gasometer and wound up at The Barley Corn down the road on Johnston Street.

They bought it – on Twitter and on the Prince forum.

Speaking to M+N today, Empress booker Jeremy Furze – who was watching Prince at Rod Laver at the time – said the venue fielded 15 to 20 calls, before declining to pick up when it kept ringing after 11.30pm. “The bar staff member was tempted to string them along but ‘felt too much pity,” he said.

As for tonight’s post-show party, the rumours have already started circulating, with Te Koha taking to Twitter once more. (Didn’t he learn anything from last night’s epic troll fail?)

While M+N is loathe to contribute to the speculation, we’ve heard varying reports about a show at Docklands (possibly Alumbra) and also The Palace, where Public Enemy were scheduled to perform. That show has since been shifted to the Espy for no apparent reason – make of that what you will. As for The Empress, Furze said the Purple One is always welcome to perform on its hallowed stage. “If he wishes to play here tonight open mic registration is from 7.30pm,” he joked.

All the critics hate you in Melbourne
Hang on..you got 4 responses and you are calling that a 'troll'
Given some of the activity around these parts, I thought you would know a bit more about 'trolling' than that.
it's an after scoop
There were tonnes of re-tweets yoghurt, plus the Empress had 20+ calls
Now with extra sprinkles!!

This is a thing beauty and a joy forever.
It is Melbourne folklore that if you wanted to see the Little Purple One after hours, the Greyhound in St.Kilda is your best bet.

I wouldn't be surprised if Prince did return the favour to Public Enemy... he's known for that sort of thing. He's always good at acknowledging his fellow musicians.
I still think Melbourne will get an official Prince ''after show'' following his May 30 Rod Laver gig.
you and the herald sun confidential section both.
...yeah? I don't read The Hun but I'm glad such credible sources share my hunch!
this just in via Tone Deaf....
''We're hearing pretty strong rumours from reliable sources, other than Nui Te Koha (sorry Nui) that Prince is backstage at The Espy right now in Melbourne. Unsure at this point if he will be performing on stage with Public Enemy. But don't bother racing down, the show is sold out''
It must be a pretty cool feeling to have a couple hundred (or thousand?) people speculating about exactly where you'll be every night, and whether or not you'll be playing any music.
Prince was at the espy, but left. Flava was sucking up big time. PE were great, but i had to leave when Flav got on the drums. I hope i don't live to regret leaving that gig. Babysitters.
Was going to happen but PE played too long and the Prince crew had a flight to Brisbane. Flava introduced them (near 1.30 am) but one of PE crew had to run on stage to tell him they were going. So we got a Flava fuck racism speech instead.
Speaking of Brisbane, any afterparty rumors for tonight? (There's also the second show next week though.)
Glad I left at nearly 1am, then. Flava said early on ''you're all going to get your money's worth!'' and reminisced about jumping on Prince's table at some awards ceremony, and generally slowed things down with a lot of talk. Still, at over 2 hours it was worth the ticket price for Public Enemy. Except when they got the amateur MCs up out of the audience. Harrison, what thu fuck man?
Harrison should have his own rap segment on Sesame St. Kids all over the world would count to five to Harrison's rap.
The Indie Temple
so, Prince was thrown out by The Espy bouncers? Is that the official line?
Like it was the LA riots
It was an important time for him.
