M+N Lunchbox #18: Oh Mercy

Related: Oh Mercy, Lunchbox.
Before they embark on a national tour in September (dates here), Melbourne’s Oh Mercy will give us a taste of their new album Deep Heat.
The band will play the next instalment of the M+N Lunchbox – a series of free gigs – at the Workers Club in Melbourne on August 24, 1pm. Released on the day of gig, Deep Heat was recorded at the Family Farm Studio just outside of Portland. It’s the follow-up to last year’s Great Barrier Grief, which came in at #28 in our annual Critics Poll. Deep Heat was produced by Burke Reid (Jack Ladder, The Drones) and features cover art by legendary Australian photographer Rennie Ellis.
Lunchbox recently returned after a six-month hiatus with a performance by King Cannons (watch it here). Past gigs have included The Howling Bells, Adalita, The Panics, Lost Animal, Henry Wagons and The Vasco Era.
As always, Oh Mercy’s performance will be recorded for later consumption on M+N TV. Check out photos, videos and news about upcoming events at our dedicated Lunchbox page.

FRIDAY!
TODAY!
meet'n'greet with new editor doug wallen
Naw I nearly chucked a shicky today and this is what I would have done.
I am at this. There are a lot of people here.
This was poor but the graphic design was respectfully executed.
The main bloke has an eggshaker.
Packed to the gills now. Crowd pretty quiet; either passively receiving song-writing genius or bored.
What's the folded/unfolded arms ratio?
Too far back to get an accurate reading.
Playing another song now, sounds much like the previous one.
Guesstimate: 70% folded.
This song owes a fair debt to Edwyn Collins' Girl Like You.
Vox a bit pitchy.

Never heard of it.
They are a band from Brooklyn, yeah?
What's the look bored/move to the groove ratio?
Band and crowd members respectively
Fair go. I'm a journalist, not a statistician.
However, here's one stat: the first lunchtime beer is always the best beer of the day.
Oh yeah, the music: this song features very bleached-out reggae vibe, like bad Roxy Music single on 33 not 45.
And terrible falsetto.
Now playing hit single. Falsetto better on this one.
140
Gig over.
Is there encore conditioning?
Houselights still down? No house music?
Can we get a Pitchfork score tempben? Or do we need to have the usual long-form written review?
No encore, house lights up, 90% of the (young and attractive) crowd has gone.
That said, the keyboard player is still on stage showing a girl how his organ works.
wait til she pulls the knob!
''Then just oscillate to the max''
Like their other albums, I'd say 30% was really great but the rest was boring.
In a few more albums, we're gonna have a decent Greatest Hits Set!
