News In Brief: FBi, I Oh You, Nuggets
– The ever-prolific, ever-present FBi Radio are celebrating a landmark 10 years on September 8 with a music-and-art blowout spanning four stages and 35+ acts at The Carriageworks in Sydney. Among the bands included are The Presets, The Laurels, Seekae, World’s End Press, Straight Arrows, Collarbones, Naysayer & Gilsun, Zeahorse and new Modular signing Movement, plus a robust dosage of hip-hop (Hermitude, Urthboy, Spit Syndicate, Thundamentals, etc.). FBi began broadcasting in August 2003, with a unique mission of playing 50% Australian music (half of that from Sydney). It’s since grown to serve a weekly audience of 250,000 today. Tickets are on sale now.
– Home to the likes of DZ Deathrays, Violent Soho, Bleeding Knees Club and Snakadaktal, Melbourne label I Oh You has just unveiled the second volume of its digital compilation Coming Up, Not Down. The all-Aussie new collection packs in a lot of disparate acts, from Pond and Jagwar Ma to Owl Eyes and Baptism of Uzi to Palms and Oscar Key Sung. Grab it here for the price of a name and email address.
– As previously announced, last year’s Nuggets: Antipodean Interpolations of the First Psychedelic Era is coming out on limited double vinyl alongside Down Under Nuggets: Original Australian Artyfacts 1965-67. Now comes “A Nuggets Natter,” a live conversation at Sydney’s Red Eye Records on the comps’ release date next Friday (July 5). Antipodean Interpolations co-producer Owen Penglis (Straight Arrows) and ’60s musicians Lindsay Bjerre (The Sunsets, Tamam Shud) and Barrington Davis (Raining Teardrops) will discuss the enduring legacy of that era’s garage and psych rock, mediated by Marty Doyle from FBi’s Dusty Fingers. There will also be free beer (while it lasts) from Mountain Goat Brewery. The event starts at 5pm. Below, hear Bleeding Knees Club cover The Magic Mushrooms’ ‘It’s A-Happening’, one of eight new tracks unique to the Antipodean Interpolations vinyl along with contributions by The Night Terrors, Bad//Dreems, The Icypoles, Melodie Nelson, ScotDrakula, New War and Bored Nothing.
