I never thought Notes' model was sustainable. Especially with Camelot and Vanguard on the same page, more or less. It was the good old ''let's run a business on 4 hours trading a day model.''

Checkers I think that's what I'm saying?

Drum and Brag have never used their websites as a resource. The drum's comprehension of the internet is fucking risible.

The variable isn't that facebook made people less interested in seeing what's on via a centralised source that wasn't an actual real-world friend but that Beat have a good online gig resource.

Game Of Thrones (HBO Series)

Now a scientific breakdown of the plausibility of creating a wall of ice in a place that is always below zero would be interesting.

I think what's interesting about things like the wall climb is whether or not it's authors making mistakes because of being pragmatic about research they can realistically do or because they need the characters to have an interaction that precludes strict realism.

Martin is largely appreciated for keeping deus ex machina out of his plots as far is practicable for the genre of fantasy so it's kinda fair to expect realism.

''Not enough venues. Seems like everything is at the Oxford Art Factory''

Jesus Christ.

I read this as ''Not enough check-who's-checking-you-out hipster paranoiac venues to see bands you think noone has heard of but you while everyone else is seeing local bands you haven't heard of at The Union, The Green Room, The Midnight Special, Red Rattler, Camelot, Vanguard, Blackwire, The PBC'' (and that is just the inner west. Brighton Up Bar and FBI Social provide an awesome alternative to OAF on the east side and there are still newer venues than them too.

If you cannot find a venue in this city right now I would suggest that you occasionally tune into 2SER for a break from FBI which is very yoof centric and a little limited in scope around the daytime ''drive'' time of day. When I had some money to spend on radio advertising for The Union I polled our FB fans and the preference was overwhelmingly that 2SER better represented the venues demographic - people over 26 who still passionately attend gigs and keep up with music. I was pretty surprised by that.

A co-worker of mine volunteers as a presenter at FBI and I think she's fairly representative of the demographic. She's a young student and makes no claim at all to being a music geek. She's there for the experience. It's a demographic that will hit up Frankie's pizza or a nightclub way more often than they will go see a band (or someone who writes their own music) playing. Only musicians ring up and scope out new places to play when they are hitting a wall due to oversupply to the established places. Only musicians know where all the venues are. I think 2SER is a little better at picking this up because the are slightly more skewed to older, long-time presenters who know a lot of people in bands.

Making this a 2SER vs FBI thing is stupid as it's only a tiny, teensy factor. What I'm really saying is that smaller venues do not have the money (and staff time) to get their events talked about on radio and in other press channels. For the small amount of money (or none) being made by bookers at these types of places, they rely on bands telling their mates for their publicity and that leaves a lot of people, maybe you, in the dark for how much really fucking high quality music is going on outside of OAF and Goodgod. There is rarely a fortnight or month that goes by that I don't have a band on who have either currently or in the past had high rotation on FBI, 2SER or TripleJ. But with the splintered information channels of post-2010 Sydney you have to go looking for it rather than assume it will be in your face. A lot of that is the success of facebook.

Tom Waits Australian Tour

I'm tired of waiting. This September I'm celebrating my Bday by putting together a bunch of friends to do Tom covers for a whole night. I'm baggsing the Real Gone album.

I believe a certain M+Ner is working behind the bar and argued strongly for a more sydney-centric beer price. What beer was $30 a jug? There is a touch less than 3 schooners in a jug so that seems a bit off considering I'm fairly sure they were looking at setting domestic draught beers at $6 a schooner. That would make jugs of carlton 17 a schooner.

Dumbest Chorus Lyric EVER

Comment I Made 16 days ago

Doesn't that Matt Corby song have a chorus that goes:

''Somebody call out to your brother He’s calling out your name''

It's a ''call out'' triangle...

Maybe they're playing that laser safari thing and the guys brother is deaf in one ear so the guy's brother is calling him but he can't call back cuz he's on the wrong side of his head. Ay.
