– ‘High Window’ is a shambling, charming effort from Aucklanders The Vietnam War. Coming on like a grizzled old rocker that can’t get out of bed, the band strikes up a laid-back, countrified groove, as singer Lubin Rains creates a wistful small town tableau. Newly signed to Spunk, it’s the first song from their forthcoming debut, set for local release on October 1.

– On the subject of laid-back, Melbourne’s Dick Diver herald their forthcoming New Start Again with opening track ‘Through The D’. Dual/duelling singer/songwriters Rupert Edwards and Alistair McKay can’t decide between ’80s indie pop and ’90s indie rock, so they compromise. In the end, the track comprises a slouching Pavement groove, and a sweet‘n’sour Go-Betweens lyric. It’s Edwards’ song, so he gets to do the loverlorn McLennan bit, but bassist Al Montfort almost steals it with his spot-on Robert Forster impression at 1.55.

– On the subject of opening tracks, Twerps have given the world a winner in ‘Dreamin’. From their upcoming, self-titled full-length, ‘Dreamin’ features typical Twerps tropes; the Flying Nun guitar jangle, syrupy, melodic bass and Marty Frawley’s keening vocals, equal parts melancholy and misanthropy. In fact, the only major departure from the rather lovely Twerps formula is the sound quality, with the customary tape hiss replaced by bona-fide, studio-quality sonics.

– Building on 2010’s alt-country-tinged The Lighter Side Of…, Laura Imbruglia amps up the volume and the intensity on new single ‘Why’d You Have To Kiss Me So Hard?’ Soon to be launched in Sydney (FBi Social on November 5) and her new base of Melbourne (The Workers Club on October 29), the relocated Imbruglia gets her Crazy Horse on, with a stomping groove and a properly addled guitar solo. The track was produced by Liam Judson from Belles Will Ring in the Blue Mountains, and features musicians from Talons, Songs and Jewel & The Falcon.
