– Ahead of the release of new album 5, long-running British electronic pop duo Lamb have commissioned a remix EP for lead single ‘Build A Fire’. As well as Evil9, Gaudi and Lamb’s own Andy Barlow (under the moniker LOWB), there are contributions from Domeyko/Gonzalez, and an effort by Jonathan Boulet and kyü’s Alyx Dennison. The latter, renamed ‘Build A Fier’, is probably the pick of the lot – including the original. Boulet and Dennison do away with the xylophones and climactic choruses, and replace them with a synth burble and successive layers of gauze. Boulet offers a more subdued lead vocal than Lou Rhodes’ slightly overwrought original, while Dennison’s impassioned yowling is an unsettling but welcome addition.

– Sydney bedroom auteur Oliver Tank probably thought that no one would notice him lifting a lyric from Don McLean’s ‘American Pie’, as long as he did it over a dreamy, post-coital dubstep backing. On ‘Up All Night’, Tank does just this, asking, “Can you teach me how to dance real slow?” as a barely-there bass drone descends in accompaniment. ‘Up All Night’ is taken from his triple j-approved debut EP Dreams, which is available on a pay-as-you-feel basis from Yes Please Records’ Bandcamp page.

–Melbourne’s The Hello Morning are back with a new single. Having secured a distribution deal with MGM, ‘Stone Cold Lover’ bears testament to the alt country-leaning act’s growing ambitions. It’s basically a wide-screen fist-pumper, with more than a hint of the Boss in the organ and in Steven Clifford’s delivery. After recording their debut in a rural cottage, their forthcoming, self-titled album was recorded with Jimi Maroudas at Sing Sing Studios, and is due for release in February 2012.

– ‘Let Lead Rip/Gomorrah Fields’ is the first offering from The Toot Toot Toots since their 2010 EP, Curse The Crow. The double A-side – if such a thing still exists – is taken from the band’s upcoming, as-yet unnamed “spaghetti western rock opera, based on the Australian gold rush”. Implausible though it may sound, that description is pretty much spot on. With a smattering of horns and some truly hammy delivery, singers Danny Eucalyptus(!) and Giuliano Ferla tells a story of a shootout at a saloon, in which a grieving father knocks off 12 blokes, before carving his daughter’s name in their chests. Needless to say, it’s pretty full-on.
