New Noise: Glaciers, The Townhouses, Day Ravies, Sexyparty

Dreaminess rules in this week’s roundup of Soundcloud offerings.

– Melbourne dream-pop quartet Glaciers do all the right things on their debut trio of demos, including making them a free download. Unveiled back in April, they’re not strictly new, but they are totally excellent and all too promising. ‘BC’ introduces the band’s, um, wintry reverb. Catch them this very night (Nov 8) at Melbourne’s John Curtin Bandroom with the jangle-friendly Big Tobacco and Monnone Alone and “getting high on the kitchen floor” enthusiasts Bored Nothing.

– Another sampling of The Townhouses’s Forthcoming second album Diaspora has arrived in the form of the title track. With vulnerable guest vocals from Sydney’s Guerre, the creeping, romantic ballad was recorded by The Townhouses’ Leigh Hannah himself and mixed by Nick Huggins. It’s one of many collaborations on the album, which also features Giorgio Tuma, Wintercoats, Rainbow Chan and Felix Weatherbourne. Diaspora comes out Tuesday, November 20 through Yes Please, with a choice offered between buying it through iTunes or pursuing a name-your-price download from Bandcamp. The Townhouses will play The Gate’s Sound/Light/Stone at Sydney’s York Street Anglican Church on Thursday, November 29.

– Newly signed to Sydney indie staple Popfrenzy, Day Ravies are inching ever closer to a first album. It’s slated for sometime next year, heralded by the woozy charms of new single ‘Double Act’. Guitarist Lani Crooks takes the lead on vocals, but the song focuses just as much on lingering instrumental runs. The album will follow the quartet’s debut EP and, judging from this, add My Bloody Valentine right alongside the rather obvious Kinks on their list of touchstones. Day Ravies will play Brisbane’s day-long Lost Race Festival on Saturday, November 17 at Coorparoo Bowls Club.

– The exquisitely named Sexyparty is the improvised work of Melbourne pals Alex Jarvis (Black Cab, Gaslight Radio), Stu McFarlane (Mountains in the Sky), Chris Smith (Golden Lifestyle Band, Bad Orchestra, solo artist) and Chris Patterson, with help from Richard Andrew (Underground Lovers) and Rory Cooke (Gaslight Radio). Recorded at three different studios, the band’s eponymous eight-song album was mixed and mastered by Lindsay Gravina. The standout ‘Just Don’t Say That You Love Me’ is noisy in a very nonchalant way, feeling almost like an extension of Pavement’s ‘Fillmore Jive’ if you overlook Patterson’s increasingly creepy come-ons. There are no gigs on the horizon for the “post-romance” band, as Patterson is up in Cairns at the moment doing gigs as Bunni, but you can hear more eccentric album selections here.
