– “A short but stormy number about being pregnant during the London blitz,” ‘Black the Panes’ is the lead single from Wild Oats’ seven-song EP Bounty. The Adelaide trio recorded it with Pat Lockwood (Old Mate, Terrible Truths) largely in the basement of recently embattled DIY venue Format. The band will launch it in Melbourne this Saturday (March 16) upstairs at Gasometer, flanked by The Ocean Party, Cat Cat and Wiley Red Fox. The EP is out now on CD and digitally through Bandcamp. Comparisons to Jens Lekman and Belle & Sebastian hit the target quite well, for starters.

– Continuing the “shadowy and bleak yet undeniably comfortable” feel of their 2011 self-titled record, Melbourne quartet Parading make no bones about slowing the pace to out-and-out plodding with ‘Apollo’. It’s as divine as ever, and a taste of the forthcoming album Swallowing a Sunflower, recorded last year with “Idge” at Soundpark Studio and then mixed and mastered by Nao Anzai at his home studio. Led by former Witch Hats guitarist Tom Barry and comprising Keith Mason (White Woods) on guitar, Tom Coleman (Pageants) on drums and Tom Briglia on bass (Creaks, Sissysocks) – yes, that’s three Toms all up – Parading will play The Grace Darling next Thursday (March 21) with Straw King Eye and Carp, and Public Bar next Friday (March 22) with Map Ends and The Spinning Rooms.

– As previously mentioned, Adelaide’s Bad//Dreems are hitting the road this month with Mining Boom and Palms. Now there’s a short and scathing new song, ‘Caroline’, the lead single from their self-titled EP on Mirador. Produced by Paul “Woody” Annison (Children Collide, Hunting Grounds), it’s “a classic tale of toxic love, jealousy and self-sabotage” that has a bit of Nirvana in the vocals. The single comes out April 5, with the EP to follow later this year.

– Is Darren Cross (Gerling, The E.L.F., Betty Airs) the hardest-working man in show business? Sure feels like it. Besides releasing the solo EP Freak Out Inn III in mid-April, his duo Jep & Dep are launching their debut EP. And who better to support them live than … Darren Cross! Prolific superpowers aside, Through the Night is the EP and there’s already a video for ‘Ain’t Coming Back’. Jep & Dep is a collaboration with Jessica Cassar, “a ’60s-inspired folk/country duo that write nostalgic songs telling of love gone right and love gone wrong.” In just their first year together, they’ve already “toured Berlin’s underground folk venues [and] busked in Paris and Italy.” Through the Night was produced by Cross at his own studio (of course) and packs the previous single ‘The Fall of the Leaves Never Cease’. It’s music to cry in your beer to. Or better still, whiskey.
