Four different facets of Melbourne music collide in this week’s roundup of Soundcloud offerings.

– Murder ballad-loving Melbourne five-piece The Death Rattles wring a lot of torment and catharsis out of the form on their free single ‘Crying Moon’, the gritty first taste of an upcoming album. The single launches tomorrow (April 5) at The Spotted Mallard, with support from The Magic Bones and Alysia Manceau. It’s $10 + bf. It’s also the band’s last show for three months “while they travel the world.”

– Another free single out of Melbourne is the double A-side ‘Never Far From the Surface’/‘Electric People’ from A Man Called Son. Especially sweet is the former, a piano-y gem smudged with Mellotron and trumpet that recalls the more introverted of the great 1970s singer-songwriters. Self-described as an “ominous, snarling rocker,” the “flip” shows another, ahem, side of the band and frontman Simon Pearlman. Both songs come from second album Midnight Associates, out May 6. The single launches this Sunday (April 7) at The Workers Club with Velcro (themselves launching ‘Bottle Shop’), King Tears Mortuary and Ciggie Witch. Kicks off at 7:30pm, for just $6.

– Fatti Frances has just gone and followed up last November’s Sweaty EP on Heavy Lows with the digital-only album Lie for Me. Co-produced by Fatti Frances (nee Raquel Solier) and Morgan McWaters (WORNG, The Emergency), it boasts cover art from Matlok Griffiths. As for the music? While the “clean, crisp production” was apparently intended “to cater for a more mainstream and radio-orientated audience,” it’s still top-notch slow-burn R&B crinkled with plenty of arty details. Start with opener ‘Ooh Baby, Baby’ and let the rest slink on by.

– Having found many fans with 2011’s “undeniably beautiful” Neon, Melbourne producer – and recent high school graduate – Naminé (a.k.a. Darcy Baylis) has just shared his latest work. The free ‘Celestia’ foretells the debut LP Celestial Love, “a brooding pop record that perfectly captures the raw confusion of mid-pubescent sexual drama without ever seeming self-aggrandising and silly.” The album is due out this year on Bossman, home of Kwasi Bongo and Naysayer & Gilsun. As a first taste, the doleful ‘Celestia’ lays on enough gushing yesteryear synths and ominous peripheral tones to steam up any mirror in no time flat.
