– Though recorded nearly two years ago, Babaganouj’s new EP Sife Lucks didn’t come out until March. The Brisbane trio – named after a 12-second Smudge song – keep their own songs pretty short as well, starting with the early-Weezer-esque ‘Somebody Turn Me On’. The EP was recorded by Sean Cook (Go Violets, Big Scary) and Tim Steward of Screamfeeder and We All Want To fame. Check out the jangly, distorted gem ‘Love Loathe Love You’, and catch them live this winter in Brisbane and Sydney.
Thurs, June 27 – Alhambra Lounge, Brisbane, QLD
Fri, July 19 – Southside Tea Room, Brisbane, QLD
Sat, Aug 3 – The Beresford Hotel, Sydney, NSW

– Auckland producer Totems (a.k.a. Reuben Winter of the garage-y trio Caroles) released the three-song EP Bardo Thodol as a name-your-price download on Monday. It’s named for the Tibetan Book of the Dead and adds darkly atmospheric (and at times industrial) touches to his worn-on-sleeve trap influences. In keeping with the EP’s balance between mainstream and indie preoccupations, Winter has remixed fellow NZ acts Grass Cannons, Louis Baker and Skymning as well as commandeering a couple Soulja Boy tracks.

– Fresh off a cameo in the US/Mexico tour diary from Fallopian Tunes labelmates Yolke, Melbourne’s Big Yawn have shared the dissipated and dubbed-out ‘Lowlite’ from their new ‘Hash Matters’ 7”, recorded at Head Gap by Simon Cotter (a.k.a. Document Swell). The synths/samples/drums duo of Tim Slattery and Kinlay Denning are self-described as “a broadcast of transgressive industrial electronic sounds merged with ominous and assaulting beats.” They’ll launch the 7” at The Tote on Thursday, June 20 alongside Bonnie Mercer (Grey Daturas, Breathing Shrine), Jealous Husband and Call Me Professor. Further down the track, they’ll appear at the monthly series Electric Cultures at the mighty Old Bar on Thursday, August 1 with Cocks Arquette, Match Fixer and Gurner. Big Yawn can also be heard on Fallopian Tunes’ recent mixtape for The Lifted Brow.

– True to its title, ‘Grow Up’ is all about coming of age and the crucial changes of heart and personal trajectory (complete with “a ticket to the States”) that accompany that. It’s the gorgeous, synth-soft debut track from Shoop Dreams, the Melbourne duo of Sean Wilson and Annur Yusuf. With its seamless blend of youthful naiveté and knowing wisdom, Yusuf’s vocal delivery is a perfect match with the lyrics. The single comes from an upcoming EP, and was mixed and mastered by Robert Bravington of Early Woman at his Bobby Brave Studios.
