New Noise: Miss Destiny, TV Programmes, Snowy Nasdaq, #459

By

This week’s roundup of new music spans instant garage anthems, noisy jangle, daggy oddness and basement electronics.

– We mentioned Miss Destiny in this column a few weeks back, when covering Harriet Hudson’s other band, the Angie Bermuda team-up Southern Comfort. Like Southern Comfort, Miss Destiny have a new 7” out through US label Hozac. It’s dubbed House of Wax, and the first taste is ‘The One’, an instant anthem that jumps straight into droning vocals and robustly melodic garage rock. It’s catchy in a gnashing, old-school way – complete with snide lyrics like “You’re just another dog in the pound” – and could pass for something unearthed from decades past. Miss Destiny play The Tote on Friday, August 22 with Taco Leg, Power and Hunting Huxley, while a proper launch is in the works. For now, you can order the record via the label link above on 150-run gold vinyl and – after that sells out – 375-run black vinyl.

– We know precious little about TV Programmes, but we’re liking what we hear. The Sydney quartet released the name-your-price EP Combuster back in April – with striking cover art by Kaspar Kägi – and its five songs mingle easy-going jangle-pop with noisier, almost shoegazing turns. The latter element comes to the fore at the start of ‘Kite Pilot’, though the vocals remain demurely soft. The closing title track, meanwhile, is an eight-minute dirge that seems quite removed from the aw-shucks sweetness of opener ‘Breadbox’. Check out a demo from last year, and catch them at any of the below gigs, including this visual-art-steeped warehouse event.

Fri, Aug 1 – Spectrum, Sydney, NSW [Cancer Council benefit, w/The Indians, Wolf Cola, Lyall Moloney + Gypsys of Pangea]
Sat, Aug 9 – Black Wire Records, Sydney, NSW [w/Seahorse Divorce, Hot Girls + Burlap]
Sat, Aug 16 – Night on Earth @ warehouse location TBA, Sydney, NSW [w/Thunderpup, Wren + many more]

– Cheeky cover image aside, the latest entry in Snowy Nasdaq’s single-a-month series is another oddball pop gem. Snowy’s vocals are instantly recognisable from his turns at the mic in The Ocean Party, but ‘Lopsided Smile’ distinguishes itself with a drum machine beat, squiggly bass and synth and other daggy cues. (Is that a sax solo in there?) The off-kilter tune can be bought now for any price. Snowy Nasdaq plays The Workers Club on Thursday, August 21 with Jesse Davidson and Millions.

– You might know #459 as the creator of film clips for the likes of Clag, Gravel Samwidge and Multiple Man. But he – that is, Brisbane’s Merl Beauregard – also makes music under the same guise, and there’s a collage-y new album in the postcode-named 4305. It’s distorted, piecemeal, basement-electronic stuff, ranging from shout-outs to Kitchen’s Floor and Crawlspace at the start to the synth-stalked instrumental brooding of ‘Metrocolor’ and the bass-roughened cassette homage ‘TDK’. The tracks are a bit short at around a couple minutes each, and a few replays might be required to tease out their full potential. Overall, though, Beauregard seems to be having with pop-cultural nostalgia, both embracing and cartoonishly exaggerating it. Besides being available digitally, 4305 is yielding limited prints and a DVD companion – further merging #459’s love of both the audio and visual side of things.
