‘Our Heavy Heart’
This was the first song I wrote after moving to France. I was going to weird DJ nights and was inspired to experiment with new sounds.
‘Lucky Bamboo’
I searched for a new synth for writing and recording this album. I wanted one very recently released so the album could only have been made now. So I got a Studiologic Sledge. It’s on every song but I love it the most on this one.
‘We Live Out of Sight’
My favourite part of this song is the schizophrenic guitar solos. We just kept adding more, changing guitars and sounds each time.
‘Memory Maps’
I wrote this while spending a summer in the Rhône-Alpes countryside. Sometimes you see landscapes so beautiful you wish your friends could see them too. I didn’t own a guitar at the time. The studio had a Tokai Breezysound. I loved it so much on this song that after that I bought one.
‘All the Birds’
Once a year in Lyon, for a day or two in autumn the skies are black with migrating birds. That was happening when I wrote this song.
‘Saint-Malo’
Named after the beautiful walled city in northern France. This song was a train-ride creation on the way to and from a holiday there.
‘Everything’s Sailing’
I programmed the drums to sound like the pre-programmed drum machine on a Yamaha C605 organ. Another song about summer in France.
‘The Nights Were For Exploring’
This song is to remember that when something comes along and ruins your day you can learn from it. Better times are just ahead. Don’t get sidetracked in the mystery of a random accident.
‘That Spanish Spring’
Named after watching Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds at Primavera Festival in Barcelona. There’s a place in my heart for sunny happy pop songs and writing one is something I wanted to try.
